FORT William shinty boss Peter McIntyre has challenged his team to raise the standards - or face a MacTavish Cup exit.

The Premier Division title hopefuls were held to a 2-2 home draw by Bute as Newtonmore strengthened their grip on top spot at the weekend with their 5-0 romp at Glasgow Mid Argyll. It's the last eight of the MacTavish this weekend and Skye and Fort face a 12.30pm Portree showdown for the right to play the winners of the Kilmallie v Lochaber tie. Skye will be on such a high after their 6-1 first round Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup romp last weekend against Ballachulish. McIntyre knows they must return to the way they played when they smashed three without reply against Kyles Athletic and their 6-0 hammering of Kingussie if they are to beat their Saturday hosts. He explained: "We have set high standards this season, but last weekend we fell well short of them. We have to be more clinical in front of goal, so that we're not chasing the game. We got a late winner the previous week against Lovat, but we can't expect that to happen too often. "Skye have got off to a solid start to the season and we know this is a difficult tie. We'll have to get back to the way we played against Kyles to get through. We want to win every game that we play and that means going all the way in the MacTavish. It's my job to lift the players and I know we'll be ready for Saturday's match." John Macdonald misses out this weekend, but Chris Bamber returns for the Fort. Fort's second string meanwhile, who won 4-1 at Beauly last Saturday, welcome their Kilmallie counterparts this weekend. It's derby day on Saturday when two North Division One title hopefuls meet at Caol as Kilmallie welcome Lochaber in the MacTavish Cup last eight. The Spean Bridge side cruised to a 6-1 first round win in the Camanachd Cup on Saturday, while Kilmallie hit five without reply against Taynuilt in the same competition. In North Division Two, Glengarry will hope to bounce back from their 3-2 league loss away to Glenurquhart last weekend when they welcome Newtonmore to Invergarry. Ardnamurchan failed to raise a team for the North Division Three fixture at Aberdeen University last week, but welcome Lochcarron this Saturday. Related articles: |
