NEW Lochaber shinty boss Ally Ferguson has swiftly moved to net his ideal coaching team for the challenge ahead.

The former Scotland and Fort William boss has just taken over the hot-seat at the Spean Bridge Premier League club after helping his predecessor Michael Delaney latterly with the seniors – as well as the juniors since 2000.

And he has wasted no time in luring two key men to help him build on the success of Lochaber's top-flight survival.

Duncan Kelly and Jason Latto will work with Ferguson and the manager is delighted that they have agreed to get on board.

He told the Lochaber News: "Duncan has been a top referee, was an ex-international and Lochaber boss, as well as playing for the club in the mid-1980s, which was a successful period.

"Jason, another ex-Lochaber player, has coached the under-12s and under-14s in recent years and will be another very important addition for me.

"It's great to get two people in with such a wealth of experience."

Ferguson, who guided his country to a sensational first-ever win against the Irish in their coveted Croke Park in 2006 during his unbeaten reign at the helm, will be seen by rival clubs as a top appointment.

Having helped bring some of the Lochaber starlets through to first-team level, Ferguson explained that a steady progression is the target in the years ahead.

The 45-year-old said: "There are exciting times ahead here because we have a really good blend of youth and experience. We have three or four older players who still have several years left at this level and we have under-17s who have broken through and are proving they have the ability to cope.

"We do have aspirations, but we also know that it won't happen overnight. We have to start reaching cup semi-finals and finals and challenging for points against teams such as Kingussie, Newtonmore and Fort William in the league.

"I have just taken over the job and it's important that I sit down in the near future and decide together what our realistic and achievable targets should be for next season. The potential is certainly here at Lochaber and I'm just delighted to have been given the chance to take over from Michael and I'm looking forward to preparing for the season ahead."
