Hayes, on 35 minutes, screwed his shot wide and the ball was just missed by Shane Sutherland.
At the other end, Carey then went for goal from distance but fired high over the bar.
The best opportunity came a few minutes before the break when Buddies striker Steven Thompson headed straight at Esson from six yards after the cross came in from Dougie Imrie’s delivery from the left side.
ICT could have gone in ahead at the break when Nick Ross’s shot deflected into the path of Kenny Gillet, but the Frenchman sliced his drive wide of the left post.

Hayes then broke from on the left and his pass into the box was just missed by Tade at the back post.
For St Mirren, Carey then sent his free-kick from 25 yards wide of Esson’s left post.
McAusland then forced a save from Esson when his header from a Carey cross was gathered.
Gnakpa made his first ICT appearance when he came off the bench for Sutherland on 65 minutes.
Paul McGowan should have put the visitors in front in the next move, but his one-on-one with Esson was equal to it.
Winnall then came on for the injured Tade with 20 minutes to go.
Gnakpa was a whisker away from opening the scoring but his low drive came off the inside of the post.
With 10 minutes left. Hayes’ delivery was knocked over the top from close range by Nick Ross.
