Forget the display and get a win - Conlon

FORT William FC manager Danny Conlon says only a win will do against fellow Highland League strugglers Brora Rangers at Claggan Park on Saturday.

Brora are six points ahead of second bottom Fort in the table, although Conlon's men have six games in hand on their rivals.

The boss is urging his troops to forget the fancy football in favour of picking up a vital win.

He said: "A result this weekend is more important than a good performance.

"We have played quite well in recent games, such as in the game against Huntly, but this is our six-pointer and we are looking for the points against Brora.

"They have been scoring goals recently and we all know how difficult this game will be."

Brora defeated Fort 4-1 earlier in the season and Conlon says his players will be fired up for this weekend's reverse fixture.

He said: "The players know how difficult it has been for us and the sending off in that game was harsh, everyone could see that. We were disappointed by that earlier in the season. We felt we deserved something from that game, so now is our chance to prove that.

"It is possible that their preparation has been better than ours,

because we have struggled to get games and train as much as we'd like, but both teams played last weekend, so they should be fresh."

The manager knows how much the win would mean for Fort's table ambitions.

He said: "As we look at the Highland League table, we can see it is split into three mini-leagues, those at the top, the middle crowd, and five teams at the bottom.

"We always know, with our resources, that if we can get out of the bottom five, we have done really well."

Fort fell to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of title challengers Buckie Thistle on Saturday, a result Conlon said had as much to do with the weather as the quality of the opposition.

He said: "The windy conditions had such an impact that both teams were struggling to cope. It was an advantage to Buckie in the first half, and if we had gone into the break just 1-0 down, we would have had a chance in the second half.

"We had some great opportunities in the last 45 minutes, but the weather played such a big part, we were never likely to get over what happened in the first period."

The boss admitted: "Over the 90 minutes Buckie were the better side, though, and they are currently where we want to be.

"They have a really nice ground, a great set-up and some lovely people. Their squad of players is fantastic and they even have quality on the bench.

"It helped us prepare for this weekend's massive match."

Conlon does not expect Darren Duncan to be available for Saturday's clash.
