Conlon chases win on first Turriff trip

DANNY Conlon will experience The Haughs ground at Turriff United this weekend and he hopes his Fort William side can stun the hosts in the Highland League.

The Fort manager was left frustrated Saturday's home league fixture against Fraserburgh - with the rest of the division's fixture card - was wiped out by the wintry weather.

Next up - again, weather permitting - the West Highlanders make the trip to Turriff this Saturday for the experienced boss's first taste of the relative newcomers' home ground.

Turriff only joined the HFL set-up in 2009, so this will be Conlon's first time in the away dug-out and he's keen for his troops to take heart from pushing Turriff all the way in Fort William in October before being edged out 1-0.

Conlon said: "We played very well that day and their manager Mark Simpson admitted they were lucky to get the three points. I have never been there, so personally I am looking forward to it.

"Turriff have had an up-and-down season. They began the campaign very well, but they have probably been a bit inconsistent, which they'll be disappointed about. They'll have a squad of players mainly from the Aberdeen area, so we know this will be a difficult match for us.

"Our long-term injured players are obviously out this weekend, but I think a couple of others will be unavailable through work commitments. We had two trialists in the squad for last weekend and I hope that we can include them for Saturday."

Cousins Sean and Michael Ellis have now left the club, with Australia looming, so it's hoped that the trialists will shine and grab their chance to win deals at Claggan.

With all games falling victim to the weather on Saturday, Conlon added: "It means there will be a backlog of fixtures and we seem to be as hard hit as ever, but I think the league will be looking to use as many free cup weekends to fit in many of these postponed fixtures."

Fort's under-15s and under-17s sides saw their home fixtures postponed on Sunday, so they will hope this Sunday offers a chance of action when both travel to play their respective games at Forres.
