Fire safety tour bid to cut danger

fireA FIRE safety exhibition visits Lochaber next week.

Displaying the contents of a burnt out living room, the tour will highlight just how devastating a fire can be and shoppers will be encouraged to book a free home fire safety visit to ensure their homes are protected.

With 554 chimney fires in the Highlands and Islands in 2010-11, firefighters will be offering advice on how to properly maintain chimneys to reduce the risk.

Of the 249 house fires in the region in 2010-11, 57 per cent of homes did not have a working smoke alarm or had no smoke alarm at all. In the same year, 20 people were injured.

The tour will visit Morrisons Supermarket, Fort William, on Tuesday; Corpach Co-op on Wednesday; and Kinlochleven Co-op on Thursday.
