This is the time of the year when I take a look at what we are providing for wildlife in the garden for the year ahead.


A male toad searching for a mate. THIS has been such an unusual winter as far as the weather is concerned, bearing in mind that this time last year we had already experienced several weeks of semi-permanent snow with up two feet on occasions around our house. There have already been signs of the relatively milder weather with willow buds now showing, and the latest note was of silverweed along roadside verges.

The red grouse fugures as part of the golden eagle's diet. IF the golden eagle is a major icon, the raven can be classed as a minor icon as far as I'm concerned. The history of the golden eagle mirrors that of the raven in the persecution meted out over many years. Whilst the majority of birds on moorland and hill go south or move to lower ground or to the coast, the raven and golden eagle can be seen at any time of year.

A sika deer stag near Mound Alderwoods by Golspie. Where the deer are, ravens are also likely to follow. Whilst there is plenty of activity in the countryside taking advantage of the milder weather of the first half of January, there is the other side of the coin. For very large areas of the Highlands,
